In about 6 months or so, my wife and I are going to pick up a desktop computer. She wants it for our future children. I want it for gaming.

Now, the store we're buying it from is run by, and designed specifically for the Canadian military. In a nutshell, I don't pay interest on the product, and it comes off my paycheque automatically. I choose a 12, 24 or 36 month plan. So if a product cost 1000.000 dollars (after taxes) and I chose the 12 month plan, I would be paying roughly 41 dollars every two weeks for 12 months.

The reason why I'm telling you guys this, is to show how great of a plan it is, and to show why I kinda want to go with this store, and nowhere else, if I can help it. If I get the 36 month plan (and at any point I can walk into the store and pay money to drop the balance down, by the way) I would be paying about 80 bucks a month for this computer:

Intel quad core 2.83 ghz 1333 box cpu
WD 1TB SATA II 32MB Black hard drive
ASU S .775 INT P43/ICH10 3PCI Mainboard
windows vista (but i saw a windows 7 upgrade thing on the back)
kingston 2 X ddre 2gb 1066GMZ RAM (it says 8 gb in total...not sure how that works out.)
ASUS EAH4870 DK/HTD/512 MB Video card (a review of this card said that it ran Crysis on 1920 x 1200 resolution on high quality at 45 fps, on a computer comparable to this one)

Now, my question to the comp tech guys is, is this a good comp? Keep in mind that the vast majority of my gaming will still be on the consoles; this computer is mainly going to be for Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3.

What do you guys think? Worth it? This is just the computer alone. I would have to get a monitor and speakers on my own, but I don't mind doing that.

Edit: WOW. Did I ever put this in the wrong forum. Chalk it up to me being tired, or just stupid. Yeah. Stupid. Mods, can you move it to PC gaming? Thanks!

It's a great PC. The question is how much at this special store of yours?

Edit: I did the math of 80 bucks a month for 36 months, and that's $2880. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's ridiculous for a computer with no monitor or speakers.

There ya go.

EDIT: Azurite, that's a fairly good deal you've got going there. The video card's 512MB of VRAM is a bit limited if you're playing at a crazy high resolution like 1920 x 1200 (That benchmark was probably for the 1GB version), but it'll tear through games at a more reasonable res like 1680x1050.

For games like Diablo III and Starcraft II, it'll do exceptionally well.

The "12 month plan for a $1000 product" was an example.

*scratches head* Well that doesn't seem right.

Azurite, you're in Alberta, right? Does this plan limit you by store?

Ugh. I posted this in the wrong forum twice. So really, can you trust my math?

The comp comes to $2139 dollars after tax. I forgot that in Alberta, you only pay 7% taxes. With the 36 month plan, it would come to $29.00 every two weeks.

So it's a good comp?

5% in Alberta, actually. Harper lowered the GST twice, remember?

It's a great rig. If it's what you want to spend, then get it. Yes, you could probably find a better deal if you scoured the internet for parts and built it yourself and all that jazz... but it's a great rig at a good enough price.

Actually, you could probably find a better price on a prebuilt rig somewhere else. But yeah, if you're fine with spending that amount then go for it. Just remember that you'll be needing a good monitor as well.

Shouldn't you also factor in that 6th months from now, some of those parts will be much cheaper than they are now?

You could get a far better deal at Memory Express with their system builder. They'll assemble the entire thing for $40. They have locations in Edmonton and Calgary.

That's always the case with hardware... 6 months after that point, there will be far better hardware for around the same price.

Thanks, DS! I looked at the system builder, and I was pretty impressed with it. I'll have to do some serious research to get an idea of what I want.

Yeah, and the fact that by the time you finish paying for it (3 years) it won't even be that great a PC anymore.

So I'd definitely try that system builder DS mentioned.

Just find something you will be content with for the games you want to play.

Why dont you just save up and buy it. By the time you have that one payed off you could have bought it at half the price.
